Profile
The 286 km long Panoramaweg Südalpen crosses the Karawanken and Saualpe in 20 one-day stages, partly along the border with Italy and Slovenia to Styria. The trail has been in existence since 2012 and has achieved a good reputation among experts: it was voted Austria’s most beautiful long-distance hiking trail by the renowned “Wandermagazin” and was awarded an impressive 7th place. Reason enough to relaunch the Panoramaweg Südalpen 2019/2020 in order to make it known to a larger audience with targeted marketing campaigns and individual bookability. The trail is a great example for a successful cooperation of 4 tourism regions.

A new morning: Anyone standing at this hour on the summit of the Mittagskogel will experience the first major highlight on the Panorama Trail Southern Alps. Many more will follow on the 20 stages of the trail.
Above and below: The trail layout on the Panorama Trail Southern Alps impresses with its fascinating alternation of summit ridges and valley hikes. The former predominate and have given the long-distance trail its name.
Whether a hut on the mountain or an guesthouse in the valley: hikers are always welcome along the Panorama Trail Südalpen and far away from mass tourism. The Berta Hut at the foot of the Mittagskogel.
Connecting paths: What the impressive mountain wall of the Karawanken separated historically for so long is now connected with the boundless hike along the Panoramaweg Südalpen. Wonderful backlight atmosphere in the Bodental valley.
Natural wonders in abundance line the Panoramaweg Südalpen: The sea eye in the Bodental is a witness of the last ice age.
A mountain range with two faces: While the Karawanken show their rugged face towards the north, towards Carinthia, its slopes are much gentler towards the south. Here on the Hochobir.
After crossing the Karawanken to their eastern edge, the Panoramaweg Südalpen turns north to the Saualpe. In the process, the lovely cultivated landscape at the intersection of the Drau and Lavant valleys is hiked through: Rabenstein castle ruins.
Majestic but different: the hike along the gentle ridge of the Saualpe forms a fascinating antithesis to the stages in the Karawanken and the crowning finale on the Panoramaweg Südalpen.
