Sweet comfort on the Drau Cycle Path

Not that I’ll ever drive either of those cars in my life, but that’s how I imagine it. I’m on the Drau Cycle Path – with a borrowed e-bike. On the way to have a different vacation. As a rule I go from hut to hut or am out and about on the high mountains privately or as a mountain guide, but this time I am following the magic of the water with my wife and children. And I have to say I am thrilled with the cycle tour along the Drau Cycle Path! The start in San Candido on the edge of the Dolomites is spectacular. The first stage destination is no less impressive, the small town of Lienz at the foot of the rugged Lienz Dolomites. And in between – a wonderfully easy and exhilarating bike tour in the midst of an impressive alpine landscape. Always along the life-giving water artery of the Drava, always on well-paved bike paths away from the main roads. And the good thing about it is: despite the towering mountains all around, we only have to climb a few meters in altitude. All in all, our bikes even roll downhill like the water in the Drau.

After Lienz, the landscape becomes a little lovelier without losing its alpine character. The valley of the Drau, which is still deeply cut, leads you to the next two stage destinations, the town of Spittal an der Drau and the already larger town of Villach. From Villach to your destination at the lake Klopeiner See, however, the valley widens into a basin and the lovely landscape makes you look forward to a swim in the lake Klopeiner See, our destination after four enjoyable stages on the Drau Cycle Path.

We will definitely go on vacation like this more often in the future. Because it’s not the unbearable lightness of being, as the title of a famous book and film says – a cycle tour along the Drau Cycle Path with all the services is the wonderful lightness of being.
