As a hiker you are part of the Nationalpark – please behave like one!

People love national parks! The beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park is enormously impressive even without background knowledge. Nevertheless, we would like to give you a few interesting facts and food for thought to help you prepare for your trip or to make a trail trip on the Alpe-Adria-Trail really tasty for you.
Hiking – being out and about for a few days on your own gives one thing above all: time. If you hike from the highest peaks of the national park to the valleys, you will still be amazed with rapidly changing landscapes. This is due to the fact that all climatic zones from Central Europe to the Arctic are crossed with the altitude levels. Flora & fauna on. The very well-preserved biodiversity is guaranteed not to escape your eyes in the summer months, so brightly colored and differently colored flowers sprout and attract insects with intensive fragrances for pollination. In 1986, the bearded vulture had successfully “reconquered” its homeland in the national park through a reintroduction program. Other endangered species such as the ibex, the primeval trout or the imposing golden eagle have also found their refuge here. Until July you have a good chance of encountering the bright purple flowers of the Rudolphi saxifrage on the first stages of the Alpe-Adria-Trail. Its long roots manage to burrow through high alpine rock debris to get water and nutrients. © Hohe Tauern National Park
Due to its size and originality, the Hohe Tauern National Park is a huge open-air laboratory. Ecosystems and the biology of animals and plants are researched in long-term studies. For those interested, the National Park Academy offers conferences, seminars and lectures on various research topics. An outstanding event, which is taking place for the second time this year, shows that the National Park does not shy away from complex future topics: the 2nd ANTHROPOZÄN FORUM on 20.-22. June 2019. Here, scientists discuss how people can increasingly understand and experience themselves as one with nature and how innovation can promote sustainable development.

At this point you can pat yourself on the back a little – if you are interested in and decide to go on a hiking trip via Bookyourtrail.com, you are already spending your holiday in a much more environmentally friendly way than average. Sustainable tourism is only possible through cooperation between the destination (in this case the Hohe Tauern National Park), accommodation providers and tour operators. We take our responsibility seriously as a tour operator to promote sustainable tourism. Sustainable tourism, to which we Trail Angels adhere, includes the concept of enabling people to trek through beautiful natural and cultural landscapes with only positive impacts on the environment, society and economy. The accommodation companies that we work with on the Alpe-Adria-Trail, among other things, are mostly small-structured family businesses, where you are looked after with home-made specialties. This is real agricultural primary production and goes far beyond the frequently used term “regionality”!
The love for the alpine landscape also goes through the stomach! Food such as mountain cheese is made from milk from cows that enjoy fresh grass and herbs from the mountain pastures, directly on site for hiking guests. © Franz Gerdl
A special feature of the Hohe Tauern National Park is that 35% of the area is cultivated landscape (the rest is untouched natural landscape). A healthy symbiosis of wild nature and human existence has existed in this place for 5000 years. Except for the glacier melt accelerated by global warming, the national park is largely unaffected by all world events. With this in mind, we also invite you to immerse yourself as a hiker in the world of the national park for a few days and to be part of it.
