Long-distance hiking in autumn
Panorama Trail Southern Alps – autumn hiking can be so beautiful
Do you know this too? You can hardly wait for summer after a long winter. And when it actually arrives – perhaps after a rainy spring – it’s already over again. Lots of appointments and even more ideas make summer fly by incredibly quickly and you’re tempted to postpone some of your hiking ideas until next summer.
But wait: there is something! That’s right, autumn! The months of September and October are like ‘bonus months’ for me. Months when it’s quieter again and there’s not so much going on in the mountains. Often beautiful and stable weather bathes the mountains in a golden light and hiking in pleasant temperatures is much easier. The ideal time to recharge your batteries before winter. Whether it’s to seek out another challenge that was actually planned for the summer – or simply to bring the hiking season to a cosy close.
The Panoramaweg Südalpen
in the south-eastern Alps on the border between Carinthia and Slovenia is ideal for both motivations:
If you want to take on another small challenge, then it’s best to choose the first part of this 20-stage long-distance hiking trail, which crosses the Karawanken and Saualpe mountains. Stages 1 to 13 lead from west to east through the entire length of the wild Karawanken. A mountain range that drops steeply to the north towards Carinthia, while the sun-drenched southern side in Slovenia is much milder. Small, lonely paths, repeated alpine terrain and an alternation of overnight stays in mountain huts and hospitable guesthouses promise a touch of adventure. Perhaps not suitable as a first long-distance hike, all the stages offered by the Official Panorama Trail Southern Alps Information and Booking Centre of Trail Angels run exclusively on red (moderate) mountain trails. On your hike, you will often ‘change sides’ – oh how wonderful is the constant change between the ‘dark’ rugged north side and the sunny south side on your ridge hike along the Karawanken mountains.
However, if you prefer to take it easy and simply spend a relaxing and sunny time hiking in the mountains, then the second part of the Southern Alps Panorama Trail is recommended: stages 14 to 20 first take you through the lovely cultural landscape of Lower Carinthia before climbing up to over 2,200 metres above sea level on the Saualpe. At the same altitude as the first section in the Karawanken, the character of the Saualpe could not be more different from that of the Karawanken: gentle meadows and alpine ridges above sparse forests lie like walruses in the landscape and lack any ruggedness. Instead, it offers a vastness and harmony that is rarely found elsewhere in the Alps. In between, alpine huts invite you to take a break – an ideal place to bring body and soul back into harmony and recharge your batteries for the grey and short winter days.
The Southern Alps Panorama Trail is just one example of how beautiful hiking can be in autumn – and how many different needs can be met. We at Trail Angels are the information and booking centre for some of the most beautiful long-distance hiking trails in the Eastern Alps and therefore know exactly where autumn hiking is particularly beautiful. Just take a look through the offers – what they all have in common is the fabulous quality of the trips, which has earned us a rating of 4.7 (out of a maximum of 5) on Trustpilot (many thanks to all our lovely guests!). Not to mention the fact that your autumn hike can be completely customised as usual and the convenient services such as luggage service, 12/7 hotline and detailed travel documents.
