Because we are repeatedly asked: how can a vague idea turn into a concrete project? Ideally one that creates a responsible and long-term impact and can inspire entire regions. We have reflected on our experience from 10 years of Trail Angels (and the ten instructive years in destination management before that) and developed a guideline from it — as orientation and initial motivation for everyone who wants to actively and responsibly shape tourism.

Prologue

For those with limited time and unsure whether it is worth reading this blog, two remarks in advance:

  • – We are writing here about project development in responsible outdoor tourism with moderate resources and a focus on product development and management — not about capital-intensive large-scale investments such as resorts, ski areas, or alpine theme worlds.
  • – And to avoid false expectations: there is simply no guarantee of success in developing responsible outdoor tourism projects. However, our guideline, combined with inspiration and consistent work, serves as a practical roadmap for successfully implementing your project idea.

Our guideline:

From the first idea to responsible management

1. Inspiration, motivation & teamwork
“Every project begins with an idea.” Every successful project starts with a single creative thought. But it is equally crucial that this idea is supported with enthusiasm and motivation by a strong team. Our experience shows: it is far more important to have an inspired team behind a project than an abundance of financial resources. If it is also possible to build a broad local base, gain acceptance and supporters, then the first – and perhaps most important – step has been taken.

2. The living-space principle
“My passion aligns with that of my guests.” This describes the ideal case for developing a new outdoor product. Simply share your enthusiasm for outdoor activities with your guests. This is far more responsible than copying short-term trends others have already followed. Our experience: we have focused our expertise on responsible outdoor tourism for years — because we love what we do and we know it well.

3. Mindful use of resources and aiming for what is feasible
Be aware of what resources your region already offers! Responsible outdoor tourism creates countless opportunities to gently use what exists, connect isolated facilities into something bigger, and add value with limited resources. Our experience: there is no better return on investment and no more effective regional value creation than well-designed outdoor products that make smart use of existing resources.

4. Guests long for stories & book products
Beyond landscape and infrastructure, another often overlooked potential stands out: stories. As the French mountaineer Gaston Rebuffat put it, “without the stories and myths of climbing the Matterhorn, it would just be a pile of rocks welded together by ice.” Unearth this treasure of your region and make it tangible through bookable products. Our experience: combining authentic storytelling with structured product development has become essential. That´s why we are passioned storytellers und product developers!

5. Ensuring responsibility & resilience
“In everything you do, consider the end — that is responsibility.” (Eric Schweitzer). Truly responsible projects endure — their real life begins after development is completed. Based on resilient management models, clear responsibilities, and fair distribution of value creation. Our experience: our adaptable license usage partnership model strengthens organizational structures, especially in booking and quality management. And gives products the decisive boost.

Epilogue

“And every beginning holds a magic within.” (Hermann Hesse). In combination with our guideline, this famous quote should inspire new projects. We offer a free online impulse consultation (“The Magic of the Beginning”, 60 minutes), focusing on ideas, potential, and next steps for responsible outdoor offers.
