Krk in the Kvarner Bay: Homer already described it in his book Ilias, and the Romans even called it the “Golden Island” because of its natural wealth. Known today for its seaside tourism, Krk provides an enchanting possibility to circle the golden island of Croatia in one week.

Some trail projects are created by a coincidence. And that’s a good thing! During a vacation two years ago, I was resting in a beautiful, remote bay north of the busy Baska in the cooling shade of a mighty pine tree. The waves of the crystal-clear Adriatic gently clapped on the white pebble beach and, despite this idyll, on the third day of my holiday I felt a growing restlessness. A signpost and markings led from the beach into the heart of the island, which aroused my curiosity. I followed the path, scrambled through a picturesque gorge and climbed a windswept karst hill with a breathtaking view of the Kvarner bay. The symbiosis of the rich green of the oak forests, the dazzling white of the karst rocks and the azure blue of the Adriatic Sea captivated me. And the idea of designing a circular hiking trail around the island never let go of me.

This was followed by further stays on Krk, not only by myself but by almost the entire team, with the aim of making the “Krk Island Trail” a reality. The outcome is not only a result to be proud of, it is a true dream for island hiking.

The Krk Island Trail enchants with its variety and charming contrasts! While the north of Krk is more dominated by lush vegetation with shady pine and oak forests, the south fascinates with its barrenness and moon-like plateaus. In between you hike through lonely bays, which invite you to a foot bath or a jump into the cooling water, depending on season and temperature. And after some lonely hours of hiking, the stage towns, all idyllically situated on the coast, invite you to enjoy a convivial break in the restaurants and Konobas. The capital Krk with its historic old town, the picturesque winegrowing village of Vrbnik on a cliff, the small, dreamy fishing village of Silo or the lively Baska with its endless promenade, to name just a few.

If you are looking for a fascinating hiking experience that includes mountains and the sea, then the Krk Island Trail is for you! The new trail has a number of special features that make it stand out from the other hiking trails in Croatia and the entire Adriatic region.
