Hiking in Carinthia: Unique Trails between mountains and lakes

But Carinthia is also known for its diversity of landscapes. The impressive landscape stretches from the glaciated mountains, the green alpine pastures and the gentle hills to the many smaller and larger lakes. And it is especially these clear and at the same time warm bathing lakes with their turquoise play of colors, in which the mountains are reflected, that shape the appearance of the country. But what about hiking in Carinthia?
Carinthia is increasingly perceived as an international hiking destination due to its scenic beauty. This is shown not only by current surveys but also by the fact that last year more hikers visited Carinthia than tourists who spent their holidays just at the lake. One of the main reasons for this is the international flagship product – the Alpe-Adria-Trail. But in addition to Carinthia’s best-known long-distance hiking trail, other exciting hiking trails have developed in recent years, which more and more hikers are discovering. We would like to present four Trails that will encourage you to go hiking in Carinthia.
Alpe-Adria-Trail
Over the past 7 years, the Alpe-Adria Trail has become a classic among the long-distance hiking Trails in the Alps. The slogan “From the glacier to the sea” has probably been a subject of desire for many hikers. The Trail starts directly at the glaciers of the Grossglockner and leads then along the water of the mountain creeks through the Mölltal valley. There you cross idyllic high alpine pastures and then reach the gentle hills of central Carinthia, surrounded by the many lakes. This is how hiking in Carinthia shows its most beautiful side. The Alpe-Adria-Trail has therefore become more and more a legend, which you must visit once.

If you follow the Alpe-Adria-Trail, you will also encounter another, younger but no less exciting Trail. The Nockberge-Trail is only one year old but already a well known hiking Trail in Carinthia. This is because it is the only Trail that can be hiked with skis in winter and on foot in summer. The special thing about the Nockberge-Trail is that you almost always hike along the mountain ridge. For this wonderful view, it is not even necessary to be absolutely sure-footed, since the Nockberge mountains are relatively gentle representatives of their kind. Thus, the Nockberge-Trail is a pleasant hiking tour from Katschberg to Bad Kleinkirchheim in the heart of Carinthia.

The Dobratsch circular hiking trail is a special treat for hikers in Carinthia. This circular hiking trail lies at the intersection of three cultures, the Slavic, the Romanesque and the Germanic. This is why every step of the way leads you through a historical area defined by its unique cultural diversity. In addition, the circular hiking trail combines this diverse cultural area with an incomparable natural environment. In addition, one hikes around a special mountain massif, with the largest landslide area in the Eastern Alps. This area is known as a refuge for rare plants and animals, and is therefore protected as a nature park. The landscape changes constantly during the hike, allowing you to experience a lot of diversity on a comparatively small hiking radius.

Hiking around a lake and not only around a mountain massif is of course also possible in Carinthia. As a result, the topics of “hiking” and “bathing” are once again combined. Because during the best hiking season, in early summer as well as in autumn, you can swim in the Lake Wörthersee at pleasant temperatures and hike along the Wörthersee Rundwanderweg in a relaxed way. Particularly in September and October, the region is characterized by its stable weather conditions and the special atmosphere that invites you to hike in Carinthia. This is why the claim of this circular hiking trail is: Hiking in the southern light!
